What is FSSAI?
FSSAI is a legal authority that provides food licenses to all food business operators in India. FSSAI's full form is the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI is basically a food quality control management that governs the quality products to be sold by the Food Business Operators.
A Food Business Operator(FBO) should have an FSSAI License before starting with the Food Business. The FBO should apply for FSSAI registration before starting with the production or management of the business activities. The FBO on completing the FSSAI registration should print the 14-digit number on the food packages. This process ensures that the customer's that the food being provided has undergone specific quality checks. The process for FSSAI registration is a long one since it takes around 60-90 days to get completed, you just need to file the application at the government portal. Upon FSSAI registration, if your FSSAI application gets approved then your FSSAI license will be valid for 1 to 5 years. As per the FSSAI rule, once your license expires, you are supposed to file within 30 days from the date of expiry. The FSSAI license renewal Form online will be found online on the government portal itself.
FSSAI Registration
There are 3 types of FSSAI registration namely Basic FSSAI Registration, State FSSAI License, and Central FSSAI License.
Basic FSSAI registraion :
The basic FSSAI registration is for those FBO's who have small-scale food start-up or business, or the FBO's whose annual turnover is less than 12 lakhs should apply for the same.
State FSSAI License :
The State FSSAI License is for those FBOs who have a medium-scale food business i.e. whose annual turnover is more than 12 lakhs or less than 20 Cr.
Central FSSAI License :
The Central FSSAI License is for those FBOs who have large-scale food business i.e. whose turnover is more than 20Cr.
Penalty for Non-Compliance :
If the FBO has the FSSAI license and still sells a sub-standard food item either by itself or by a person working under him, then either of them would be held responsible and charged with a fine up to 5 lakhs.
The FBO selling misbranded goods would be penalized with 3 lakhs.
IF any FBO fails to take an FSSAI License and still runs its business, then this act is punishable under law.
The fine would be around 5 lakhs and he/she may be imprisoned.
